It is hard to believe, but we are beginning our last trimester on Monday, March 11th. This is an exciting time of year, as students are starting to think about heading to Middle School next year. This week we will have our first chance to go over to the Middle School to meet with the counselor. She will share an introductory slideshow with students and answer questions. This presentation will be on Tuesday, March 12th, which is a schedule change.
We have swimming this week Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students should remember their suits and towels these four days!
This week in math we are continuing our work with fractions, decimals, and percents. Students are learning how to convert each into the other. We also did some review of prime factorization, and Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiples. We will be reviewing these concepts on Monday and then testing on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will begin our next unit. This unit will focus on Algebraic Expressions. We will start with the Orders of Operations process first.
In language we have finished writing all of our poems. Your child should have each of the following poems to share with you: Color Poem, Bio Poem, If I Were Poem, Alphabet Alliteration, Tiniest Sound Poem, Sensory Poem, and 100% Me Poem. We will begin typing each of these poems this week in Google Classroom. Students were also introduced to the YAYA essay prompts. YAYA is a conference that is held for area students at the College of St. Benedict which focuses on writing. Students from each classroom, 3-5, will be chosen to attended this conference in May. Students were able to choose from three different writing prompts, and should be working on their rough draft. Students will have a chance to work on final copies for both their poems, and the YAYA essay during class this week and into next week as well. Both final copies are due on March 21st.
Students are finishing research on their biome projects. We will have one more day of in class research time. On Wednesday students will begin the slideshow presentation they will be sharing with a small group of 1st and 2nd graders. Students will have in class time through Monday, March 18th. On Tuesday, March 19th, they will practice their presentation with class members. This is also the due date for this project. Then on Wednesday, students will share their presentations in the small groups. Their slideshow will be done in Google Classroom. Please ask your child to share his/her presentation with you! It would be another great way to practice before March 20th.
