It is hard to believe how fast this school year is going. We are already into the month of December, and before you know it the a new calendar year will be upon us. We concluded our first trimester on Friday, November 30th. Report cards will be coming home on Thursday, December 13th. As always, if you have any questions regarding your child's report card, or any other questions throughout the rest of this year, please do not hesitate to contact me.
This week in math we began our new unit. This unit is focusing on multiplying fractions, whole numbers with fractions and mixed numbers. Besides working on the skill of multiplying fractions, students are working on applying several skills we have learned in past units. These skills include always reducing a fraction into its simplest form, and the conversion of mixed numbers into improper fractions and then back to a mixed number. We had a discussion on Friday, about the how each of these skills was a building block to another concept. Sometimes skills can look like they are just one step in and of themselves, when they really are the first step to something bigger we will be learning. We will already be testing on this chapter on Tuesday, December 4th. Our next unit will be focusing on rates and ratios.
In language this week, we began working on our next writing assignment. Students began with a story starter about Santa losing his hat at a little boy's house after delivering presents. Students are working on completing the story putting their own twist on the ending. Students are working on their rough draft which I know many have shared with you at home. Students will be typing these in Google Classroom, so they can share them with you at anytime. The rough draft is due on Tuesday, December 11th. The final draft is due on Tuesday, December 18th. Students will be reading their story to Kindergarten on Thursday, December 20th!
We have continued learning about the changing Earth. This week we discussed the concepts of mechanical and chemical weathering, erosion and deposition. We did a science lab using a skittle to demonstrate each of these concepts. In the next part of this chapter, we will be discussing rocks and minerals. The test on the chapter will be either Monday, December 17th or Tuesday December 18th.
