This week in math we took a test on the first part of our geometry unit. This test included basic geometry vocabulary, finding the measurements of missing angles, and classifying polygons and various types of angles. Tests were handed back on Friday. Hopefully you have seen this test come home with your child. If you have not, please ask them about it. This week we also began working on finding the perimeter and area of various polygons. These polygons can be very simple such as a pentagon or rectangle, or more complex with various polygons in one shape. This week we will begin working on finding volume.
In language this week we began working on poetry. We discussed characteristics of poems, and several types of poems we will be writing during this unit. We will write 8-9 different styles of poems. When we are done, we will type them, and put them into a poetry book for students to keep and share with family. Students also looked at various poems and then chose one to memorize. Students will be reciting these poems on February 11th,12th,13th. Please take time to ask your child about his/her poem. The first poem we began writing is a color poem. Students have chosen their favorite color, and are now writing descriptive sentences about items this color. They will need to include similes and metaphors within their sentences.
This week in science we tested on our Energy Resources unit. These tests will be coming home on Monday. We then began a unit discussing the interaction of ecosystems. We discussed how biomes and the organisms within them work together to create an ecosystem, and the progression of an organism to a population, community, ecosystem, biome, and biosphere. We also talked about how each organism has a niche, or job, in an ecosystem, and the importance of keeping each ecosystem balanced.
There will be a social test this week either Wednesday or Friday.
