We had a great time participating in Homecoming Week activities this past week. Lots of wonderfully crazy hair and Purple Pride!
Last week week we had our first math test of the year covering place value and value of a number. We spent the end of the week preparing ourselves for this test. We then began a new chapter in math on Wednesday. This chapter will cover rounding, estimating, and adding and subtracting decimals. This is a very short chapter. We will be reviewing on Monday, October 1st and testing on Tuesday, October 2nd. We will then begin practicing multiplying multi-digit numbers. Last week students were given a short quiz covering this skill. Those that already seem to have a firm grasp, will be working on another multi- digit multiplication activity.
I hope you have enjoyed the Pioneer Days pictures! We are using our experience to work on a personal narrative about Pioneer Days. We will be finishing the rough draft this week, and then editing this writing piece as we discuss various language skills. We will be having our spelling test on Thursday this week due to the Walkathon on Friday morning.
In science we are continuing to work on studying the Scientific Method. We discussed the hypothesis and the different types of variables that play a part in an experiment. We also worked on reviewing all the steps of the Scientific Method, and matching various descriptions with the correct step.
Students also had their first Social Studies test this past Wednesday. As students are preparing for any social test, they can access Mr. Feldewerd's website at http://4feldewerd.weebly.com/social.html
Students also had their first Reading test this week. They are also working on achieving their AR goal of 20 points. Right now they should be at approximately 5 points since we are about one-fourth of the way through the trimester.
Upcoming Events:
Conference forms will be coming home on Tuesday of this week. If this time no longer works for you, please let me know. I look forward to meeting with you during this time to discuss your child's start to 5th grade.
The Walkathon will be in the morning on Friday, October 5th. Fifth graders will be walking on the Wobegon Trail. Please remind your child to dress appropriately for the day! I am hoping for a little bit of a warm-up before then. Donations can be brought to school any day this week.
Friday is also an early dismissal day. Students will be released at 12:10pm.
Have a great week!
