We tested on fractions this week. As an overall 5th grade, it appeared based on the scores, that we needed a little more practice before moving onto our next unit. All 5th grade classes took Thursday and Friday to review and practice more multiplying fraction problems. All students will take a retest on Monday, December 10th. We will then proceed with our rate and ratio unit. This test will be on Friday, December 21st.
In language we are continuing to work on our Santa's Hat stories. Students have been writing some very creative stories as an ending to the story starter. Students can access these stories through Google Classroom, so they can share these with you. The rough draft is due Tuesday, December 11th, and the final draft is due December 18th. We will be sharing them with Kindergarten on Thursday, December 20th. We just completed week 11 in spelling. Please continue to take time to ask your child about his/her spelling words. Students are not only responsible for the correct spelling of the word, but need to be able to use the word correctly in a sentence.
This week in science we talked about minerals. We discussed all the ways we are in contact with minerals everyday. Whether it is through the products we use everyday or the food that we eat. We also discussed how scientists use the characteristics of minerals such as luster, hardness, streak, smell, shape, magnetisms, and color to decide what the mineral is. We then had the opportunity to experiment with nine minerals. We performed a streak and hardness test, as well as looked at several different characteristics. Students did a great job using what they knew to identify these minerals. The test date for our science test has changed. We will now be testing on Wednesday, December 19th.
In reading students are reading and discussing the novel Hatchet. I hope your child has been sharing this exciting story with you. They have also been writing a diary entry putting themselves in the place of Brian, the main character who is stranded in the wilderness. This story has a lot of wonderful life lessons about not giving up when things get difficult.
