We have continued our fraction work this week. We began the week with a review of greatest common factor and least common multiples. We then began working on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. We also practiced converting improper fractions to mixed number and vice versa. All of these skills are very important as we continue our work with fractions. These are the building blocks which will help us as we proceed with the unit and with those that follow. Our next step this week is to work on subtracting fraction with unlike denominators which will require us to use the borrowing method for fractions. We will be testing on this unit next week Tuesday.
This week in language we have been working on ways to expand sentences, and how this will help our writing be more exciting for our readers. When we write, we try to paint a picture with our words, much like an artist does with a paintbrush. We discussed and practiced adding an adjective, and using the "W" question words: who, what, where when and how. Student had looked at various sentences to decided what had been added to expand the sentence, as well as practiced using them to expand our own. Next week we will work on expanding our written responses using the A.C.E. method.
In Science this week we began a new unit. This unit will focus on the structure of the Earth. We began taking about the four layers of the Earth, and the unique characteristics of each of them. This unit will also discuss earthquakes and volcanoes, and end with a discussion of rocks and minerals. Students should also be bringing home the test we took on Wednesday focusing on the scientific method. They will need to make corrections, and also have you sign it so I know your child has shared it with you.
On Friday we discussed our new ALICE procedure used in case of an intruder. We read a book, and then had a great discussion. I am hoping that students told you about what we discussed during this time. On December 6th at 7pm in the BEAT there will also be a parent meeting to give you more information about this procedure.
Up Coming Events:
November 21st - 23rd: No School - Happy Thanksgiving
November 30th - End of 1st Trimester
December 6th - ALICE Parent meeting 7pm at the BEAT
December 7th - Early Dismissal
