In math this week we began a new chapter. This chapter will focus on fractions. We began the week discussing the vocabulary words: factor, common factors, and greatest common factor, multiples and least common multiples. We worked on practicing all of these vocabulary words with various number groups. We also practiced converting improper fractions to mixed number and vice versa. All of these skills are very important as we continue our work with fractions. These are the building blocks which will help us as we proceed with the unit and with those that follow. If your child is still not secure with his/her multiplication facts, please take some time to practice them at home.
In science this week we finished our Scientific Method unit. Students continued to practice these steps with two separate experiments. One experiment had students working through these steps to discover how many drops of plain and soapy water fit on the head side of a penny. Many students were surprised at how many water droplets actually fit. Students also had the opportunity to work on a paper fold experiment to see how many times different types of paper could be folded in a certain manner. On Thursday, we concluded this unit with a written essay. I also introduced students to an optional opportunity, attending Science Fest which will be held at St. John’s University on January 9th. Students who are interested in attending were given three different prompts to choose from to write about. The top eight 5th grade writing pieces submitted will be chosen to go to this event.
Students concluded their Chapter 2 social studies unit on Friday with a test, or completing their short story.
In Reading/ Language Arts students are continuing to read the novel Hatchet.
Up Coming Events:
Friday, November 15th: Science Fest essay due for those who are interested
Tuesday, November 26th: End of 1st Trimester
November 27th - 29th: No School - Happy Thanksgiving
Friday, December 6th: Early Dismissal
