It is hard to believe that we are once again at the end of another month of school. This past week we watched a video called “Catch the Curve” explaining Scoliosis. This video followed a few young people who have Scoliosis, and how they have dealt with the disease and continued to still be active. All girls in 5th grade are screened at this time by the school nurse. All boys will be screened later when they are in Middle School. The difference in screening time is due to when students are going through a growth spurt. 5E girls will be screening on Monday, October 28th. They should wear a tank top under their clothes tomorrow.
Halloween is also on the way! In 5th grade we will be celebrating Halloween on Friday, November 1st which is also an early dismissal day. Students may bring a treat to share with classmates. This also counts as our monthly activity, so those students who had more than 3 late assignments/behaviors, will miss just a period of this celebration time.
In math this week we have been working on dividing decimals, and reporting them rounded to the nearest tenth or to the nearest hundredth in the case of money problems. We have also been practicing the divisibility rules for 2,3,4,5,6,9,10. We talked about how knowing these rules will come in extremely helpful with division, and as we continue through the year and discuss factors. We have also been working with exponents. Students have been reporting the value as well as, reporting them as the product of the same factor. Students are allowed to use calculators when the exponent is greater than 3. This coming week we will discuss powers of 10. We will review all of the skills from the past few weeks, and then test on this chapter on Thursday.
In science we have been perfecting our Scientific Method Skills. We began the week by working on graphing data for experiments. We worked on graphing both data on a bar graph and line graph. We have also been reading varies experiments, and then sorting through the information given identify the question, research, hypothesis, experiment, data, and conclusion. Students also watched me do an experiment, and then helped me to decide what parts were good and which parts needed to be changed. This coming week, students will begin writing all steps on their own through various hands-on experiments.
In social studies students students are learning about different Native American tribes throughout the United States.
Students have been learning about various “sign posts” in reading class before they begin their first novel of the year Hatchet. Spelling test will be Thursday this week due to the early dismissal day.
This is also the last week for keying. Most students are right on track to finish by the end of this week. Please take time to ask your child about his/her progress.
