Mr. Herdan, the Middle School band director, made a visit to 5th grade classrooms this week. He played his saxophone for us, discussed 5th grade band and band camp which is held during the summer, and was able to answer questions about our upcoming band instrument day in April.
This week in math we began a unit focusing on Algebraic Expressions. We began the week by reviewing writing a number using an exponent, as well as solving for numbers with exponents. We also reviewed adding and subtracting fractions. Both of the skills were discussed earlier in the year so this was a great refresher! The rest of the week students began working on following and using the rules for order of operations. Students learned the acronym PEMDAS(Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) to help solve these expressions. We have discussed the importance of writing ever step in this process to solve these problems correctly. Students also practiced writing an algebraic expression based on story problems, and then solving it as well.
In science we began Chapter 6. This chapter will discuss animal adaptations that may be needed for animals to survive in their ecosystems. We discussed vocabulary such as heredity, mutation, structural and behavior adaptations. We have been discussing how both animals and people can change an ecosystem in positive and negative ways. We will be testing on this chapter next week Wednesday.
Students tested on chapter 8 this past Friday.
In language students have begun working on their YAYA essays. Students are able to pick from 3 given prompts. This is a required assignment for all students. Students are able to submit their essays for consideration to attend the YAYA conferences at St. Ben’s which is currently scheduled for May. There will be 2 students chosen from each 5th grade classroom. This essay is due on March 19th.
