Last week in math we began our Geometry. We have been discussing general vocabulary such as point, line, line segment and ray. We also have been classifying geometric shapes based on their characteristics. Students have done some activities to discover that the measure of all angles in a triangle is 180 degrees, and the measure to all angles in a quadrilaterals is 360 degrees. We have also been working on taking all of this knowledge, and finding various missing angle measurements. We also took the winter benchmark for the math FAST test. These results will be shared at conferences in February.
This week in science we have been discussing our “human footprint”. How can we use all of our resources responsibly? What small things can we do in our homes that conserve energy? We watched a video about the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and the oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. We then experimented with creating an oil spill, and then trying to clean it up with items students were able to “buy”. Students discovered how hard an actual oil spill would be to clean up on a large scale. Students received a study guide on Wednesday to help to prepare for our test on Tuesday, January 12th.
Students are finishing up Chapter 5 in social studies. They will be testing this week.
In language students have taken a second look at their Santa’s Hat writing piece to correct some of their spelling and grammatical errors. They also began discussing the use of appositives, and how they can be helpful in various writing pieces. Students also completed the winter benchmark test for FAST reading.
Up Coming Events:
January 12th: Science Test
Social Studies Test
January 17th: Visit from Officer Gannon
January 17th: Early Dismissal
January 20th: No School
January 22nd: Math Test
February 6, 10,11: Conferences
