Thank you to all who have already attended conferences. I look forward to continuing to meet with the rest of you who have not already conferenced on Monday and Tuesday. Reminder that we will not have school on Thursday, Friday and Monday.
This week in math we have continued our work with perimeter, area, volume and surface area. Students had the opportunity to measure various sized boxes either in their 3D form or as a net. They practiced measuring to the nearest centimeter or inch. This activity was great practice in measuring to the nearest centimeter or inch, multiplying decimals or fractions, and finally finding the surface area of the box or net. Students also needed to use their knowledge of these math concepts to complete some word problems. To complete these problems, students needed to decide what the problem was asking them to solve, perimeter, area or volume. Then students needed to complete two or three more steps to find the answer. We will review on Monday, and test on Tuesday. We will begin a new unit focusing on fractions, decimals and percents after we return from break.
In science we have be discussing food webs, food chains, and energy pyramids. Students practiced following a food chain within a food web. We also discussed the difference between producers and consumers, and then the three types of consumers, carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. We will review this chapter on Monday, and then test on Tuesday. After break we will begin our biome research and presentation project.
In social studies students are continuing to learn about the colonization of the 13 colonies. They are beginning to learn about the introduction of slavery into the Southern colonies.
This week in language students began a poetry unit. Students are working on memorizing a poem they will be reciting towards the end of the month. Students also completed a reading test on Thursday and Friday.
