We concluded our first trimester on Tuesday, November 26th. Report cards will be coming home this week on Thursday, December 12th. As always, if you have any questions regarding your child's report card, or any other questions throughout the rest of this year, please do not hesitate to contact myself or the teacher listed under that subject area.
In math we have been focusing on multiplying fractions, whole numbers with fractions and mixed numbers. Besides working on the skill of multiplying fractions, students have been working on applying several skills we have learned in past units. These skills include always reducing a fraction into its simplest form, and the conversion of mixed numbers into improper fractions and vice versa. We had a discussion this week, about how each of these skills is a building block to another concept. Sometimes skills can look like they are just one step in and of themselves, when they really are the first step to something bigger we will be learning. We tested on this unit this past Friday. We will begin our next unit which will focus on rates and ratios on Monday. This test will be December 19th.
We have continued learning about the changing Earth in science. This week we discussed how scientists identify minerals, and did a hands-on activity with mineral kits to see if we could identify each of them based on different properties. We also discussed the three types of rocks, and how each is made. We will be reviewing this week Monday and Tuesday. As part of this review students may also bring in rocks from home if they wish to share them with classmates. The test on this chapter will be Thursday, December 12th. Students were given a study guide this past week so they could begin studying. They can also go to Google Classroom, and use the slideshow from this unit as a review as well.
In social studies students are continuing to learn about Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Exchange. Their chapter test will be on Wednesday, December 11th.
In language this week, we began working on our next writing assignment. Students began with a story starter about Santa losing his hat at a little boy's house after delivering presents. Students are working on completing the story putting their own twist on the ending. Everyone is working on their rough draft, and will begin typing these in Google Classroom this week. Students will be reading their story to a 1st grader on Friday, December 20th!
