There were quite a few students absent last week due to illness. Hoping that everyone is back to school and feeling healthy. Students also had a great time going swimming this past week, and we will be back to our normal schedule. Seems like the weather is finally going to cooperate, and it will feel a bit warm this coming week. Let’s hope this continues, and it will really feel like spring has arrived!
On Tuesday we took our test on Fractions, Decimals and Percents. This test should be coming home with your child early this week for corrections. When then began our next chapter which is Algebraic Expressions. The first day of this chapter was a review of exponents and adding and subtracting fractions. It was a great review to help reminded us how to solve for numbers that are raised to a certain power. On Thursday we began discussing Order of Operations. We learned about PEMDAS, and used this acronym to help us remember the order we need to use to solve problems with parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. I discussed with them that it is more important than ever to write down every step in solving these equations. Since the beginning of the year, I have been telling the students that the answer to math problems includes how we solve it, not just the answer. As math problems become more difficult, this will be more important than ever.
In language students are continuing to work on their poetry books and YAYA essay. These are both due by the end of the day on Thursday, March 21st. Students are typing both of these documents in Goggle Classroom. Please ask students to share both of these assignments with you. I have read some very creative poems and YAYA essays.
This week in science students began working on their slideshow presentations. Students are taking their research on the biome of their choice, and creating a presentation to share with the 1st and 2nd graders. These are due on Tuesday, March 19th, and will be shared on Wednesday. This is a great opportunity for students to be the teacher, and share their knowledge with a younger students. We will begin our next chapter focusing on animal adaptations on Thursday. This will be a very short chapter, and we should be testing on Monday, April 1st.
